Clarification on New HPC Cost Model Policy

Hello,

I am reaching out regarding the new cost model policy announced today by the HPC team: hpc:hpc_clusters [eResearch Doc]

Specifically, I would like clarification on the following paragraph:

“In cases where research groups have already purchased compute nodes, we offer them the opportunity to convert their ownership into credits for shares. We estimate that a compute node typically lasts for at least 6 years under normal conditions, and this conversion option ensures that the value of their existing investment is not lost.”

Does this mean that previously purchased private nodes will automatically lose their private status once the policy takes effect? Or is this conversion simply an optional offer, allowing research groups to decline and continue using their private nodes until the agreed-upon end date with the PI?

Thank you in advance for your clarification.

Best regards,
